Today our question comes from one of our followers, Patricia from New York.
I have had my industrial piercing for almost 3 months now, everything is going fine but I did notice that there is a small bump that is forming around my piercing. It doesn’t really hurt its just there seems like it is full of puss. Is this something that I should be concerned about? Is this going to turn in to a keloid scar?
Well based on your picture and the description of the bump it seems to be hypertrophic scarring. This type of scarring is commonly mistaken for a keloid scar but it is very different. Hypertrophic scarring just like keloid scars come up as a result of trauma to the area. This type of scarring is normal during the healing process. The only difference is that hypertrophic scarring go away with treatment and time. The best treatment for hypertrophic scarring is warm sea salt soaks. Soak your piercing twice a day for at least 5 minutes. You will see the scar go down drastically or completely disappear. Continue to clean and soak your ear until it is completely healed. Even after your piercing is healed it is imperative to clean it on a regular basis and also do warm sea salt soaks at least once a week. Make sure you change your body jewelry often to keep the piercing clean and happy! Patricia it seems as if your ear will be fine with some TLC, let us know how it goes.
