Whether you’re getting your ear pierced or your belly button pierced, there are things that you need to do to care for the piercing jewelry that you now have. The piercer who performs the piercing will provide cleaning instructions as well as the proper solution that is needed to clean the area each day. Before your piercing is performed, ask the piercer to use a needle instead of a gun as this allows for a precise pierce instead of one that could be hidden because of using a gun.
Before your piercing, you need to make sure you’re as healthy as possible. Try to hydrate your body as well as this will make it easier for the piercing jewelry to be placed. After the piercing, you need to make sure you don’t come in contact with objects that could result in trauma to the area. This would include tugging on your clothes or bumping into furniture that could result in an injury.
Avoid using rubbing alcohol on the area. This will usually dry out the piercing and can sometimes cause it to close around the jewelry. Use mild soap and water to clean the jewelry as the oils in the soap can keep the area soft for easier healing. Develop a routine for cleaning your piercing. Always wash your hands before touching the area. After you’ve cleaned the area, you can rinse it with warm water, washing your hands once again before going about other tasks during the day. Clean the area at least twice a day, usually in the morning and in the evening. Avoid sleeping on the piercing until it’s healed. Try to keep the jewelry turned at least once a day to prevent it from settling in one position. Look for any signs of an infection, seeking proper treatment if you notice any redness, drainage, or any signs of a fever in the area of the piercing.
