As amazing as piercings look, we’ve all come across the crazy horror stories that make us question if we should get one in the first place. Some of these include earrings getting pulled by toddlers to nipple and navel piercings getting snagged while sleeping.
The truth is that, no matter how careful you are, snagging happens, and it is painful and may cause an infection and scarring as well.
However, it doesn’t hurt to take certain precautions. Here are certain ways to prevent snagging from occurring and keeping your piercing safe and healthy.
Participate in Activities Wisely
A number of snagging horror stories occur during sports or recreational events. When playing basketball or football, you’re present in a fast-paced environment, which increases the chance of your jewelry getting caught in your clothes and ripped out before you even realize it. These instances aren’t related to sports activities only. Your piercing can also get caught up in your clothes or another object on waterslides, ziplines, in the club while dancing, etc.
This doesn’t mean that you stop participating in activities completely after getting a piercing. It simply means that you need to be more careful when partaking in fun activities. The best option for you is to opt for a less snaggable jewelry option when participating in a situation that has a potential risk of your jewelry getting caught somewhere.
Be Mindful of What You Wear
If you have a nipple, navel, or any other surface piercing on your body, you need to be extremely careful when deciding what to wear. Lace and mesh pose a high risk for snagging as the tiny holes in the fabric may cling on to the ends of the jewelry, causing your piercing hole to tear. This doesn’t mean that you need to avoid wearing these fabrics altogether, you just need to be extra careful when changing into or out of such materials to keep from snagging your piercing jewelry.
If it’s possible, you should take off your jewelry and put it aside when changing into such clothes. Also, jewelry snagging is extra painful when your piercing is healing. Therefore, during the healing period, you need to stay as far away from risky clothing options as possible.
Avoid Wearing Dangly Jewelry
As gorgeous as dangly jewelry looks, it poses an extra risk of snagging, especially if you’ve never worn it before. The key to avoiding snagging is to refrain from wearing dangly jewelry during the healing period. Even when your piercing has healed, it’s a good idea to limit the number of dangly pieces that you wear.
Keep Them from Getting Caught In Your Hair
While long and thick hair draped over your shoulders offers a gorgeous look, it also presents a number of snagging risks. It is extremely easy for long hair to get caught in piercings, and during the process of untangling the hair from your piercing, you often end up snagging your piercing jewelry.
So, if you have long hair, you will need to take some extra care after getting a piercing. During the healing period, make sure to keep your hair tied or wear them back to avoid jewelry snagging.
With some piercings, snagging is an inevitable occurrence. If you have multiple piercings, you can expect your dangly earring to get caught somewhere at least once. However, don’t let the feat of snagging keep you from getting the piercing you’ve always wanted. Just take a few precautions and enjoy your gorgeous new piercing!
