Let’s Get Stoned

Ever wondered what materials manufacturers use for creating jewelry? In body piercings, there is a large variety of jewelry to choose from. These jewelries are mainly consisted of materials that would ordinarily be too delicate or brittle to be inserted in small-gauge piercings; these are freely used. Manufacturers often use acrylic and metals. However, Stone, wood, bone, horn, amber, fossilized materials, bamboo, silicone and glass are also common too. Incorporating stones, previous and semi-precious stones into your body jewelry collection is a sure fire way to get “stoned” and let your style shine. Let’s dwell on stones, shall we?

Precious Finds

Gemstones or precious stones, by far, are the most common “head piece” in any jewelry. By definition, these are pieces of mineral crystal that are cut and polished to make adornments.  Most of them are hard, but some soft minerals are used because of their luster and other physical properties that give them aesthetic value. In ancient times, diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald are considered precious and others, considered semi-precious. But now in the modern world, body jewelry has been booming and not all people can afford a rare stone for their jewelry. That is why there are laboratories that recreate stones to fit for the budget of the people.

The Imitation Game

Synthetic gems are physically, optically, and chemically identical to the natural stone but are created in the laboratory in a controlled condition. The best example for this is Cubic Zirconia or CZ. CZ is composed of zirconium oxide and simulated moissanite, which are both diamond simulants. Because of this moissanite, it gives more “fire” or flashes than a diamond. Because of its low cost, durability and close visual likeness to diamond, it has become an important competitor for diamonds.  CZs are also available in different colors to follow the trend of fancy jewelry.

A Simple Black and a Splash of Color

Onyx and Opal may not be as popular as the aforementioned above, but they give jewelry a unique twist. Onyx is a black and white banded agate (chalcedony quartz). It has a waxy to dull luster and is typically opaque. Black onyx is thought to have protective properties and bring inner strength, mental discipline and self-confidence to its wearer. It is also the birthstone for the zodiac sign Leo and the seventh wedding anniversary gemstone— Perfect gifts for a partner. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone. In contrast, Opal has many colors of other gems and Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all. A hydrated silica, this gives opal it’s flashing play-of-color and intensity. No two opals are exactly alike. With this uniqueness, it can be worn with any outfit and occasion.

Diamonds are Forever

Cliché as it may sound but it’s true. Formed under high temperature and pressure condition under the earth’s surface, it is no doubt that this gem is the most valuable on earth. It’s the hardest material; 58x harder than any other material in nature. The luster may not be as flashy as the CZ, but no doubt that this gem is worth millions. The diamond is also the birthstone of April.

Whether it is genuine or synthetic, stones really give your jewelry that aesthetic visual. The fancy Cubic Zirconia, great for your labret studs, can be worn by anyone. For the men, a ring with an onyx will give a strong vibe. A beautiful opal septum clicker for the ladies, great for an evening out.
