  • Suitable Body Jewelry

For surface piercings, the best body Jewelry are straight barbells. Straight barbells feature a flat outline, as such, the strain they impose on the skin surface to which they are anchored to is minimal.

Dermal piercing by virtue of their detachable dermal top, afford their users the flexibility to choose from and easily interchange a vast array of different body jewelry styles (provided they fit into the dermal anchor)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image source=”external_link” custom_src=”https://sep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-27367612611215_2266_52229092.jpg”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5900″ img_size=”1000 X 1000″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  • Method of Piercing

The procedure for getting a surface piercing is a relatively easy one (at least in comparison with dermal piercings). It is quite common (although not advisable) for individuals to give themselves a surface piercing.

Dermal piercings require a skilled body artist. The piercer starts off by creating a bore using a dermal punch or sometimes a large gauge needle. After assembling the dermal top and dermal anchor of choice, he proceeds to insert it into the bore using a dermal anchor forceps. Over time as the piercing heals, the dermal anchor is locked into place allowing you to change the dermal top with ease.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5896″ img_size=”500 X 500″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5897″ img_size=”500 X 500″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  • Piercing Location

Surface piercings are recommended for areas of the body with a curved outline, as this reduces the impact of strain on the adjoining tissue. Undertaking a surface piercing on a flat body surface severely increases the chances of rejection.

Dermal piercings, on the other hand, can be housed at almost any location on the body with the only exception being where there’s significantly lesser amount of skin and subcutaneous tissue, as is in fingers, wrists, and toes. Also, because of their stable dermal anchors, they have a higher chance of staying in place in areas of the body that witness significant movement.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5878″ img_size=”500 X 500″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”5873″ img_size=”500 X 500″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  • Cost of Piercing

Body artists typically charge more for dermal piercings than they do for surface piercings, primarily because the former requires more skill and expertise. The difference in cost can extend up to 75% for piercings at the same location.

  • Pain Threshold and aftercare

In theory because of the complicated procedure involved in getting a dermal piercing they should be more painful than surface piercings. In reality, however, this is not the case as although dermal piercings take more time to effectuate, they impose lesser stress and strain on the surrounding body tissue. Consequently, they do not only induce lesser pain in the long run but also heal faster.

Aftercare for both types of piercings is similar and usually comprises of routine disinfection with a sea salt solution backed up by a healthy diet and lifestyle. You should also avoid touching the piercing with dirty hands as this could potentiate an infection.

With all this, it is easy to infer that dermal piercings make for a better choice of piercing than surface piercings. That is not to say that surface piercings are in any way substandard, when done right surface piercings too, can be particularly alluring.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
