Lucky Elephants Everywhere

Lately, there has been a lot of talk and symbolism of elephants everywhere. We’ve seen them on clothing, body jewelry, tattoos and just about every arena that style and fashion can touch. Did you know that there is even a day dedicated to the appreciation of elephants? What makes these magnificent animals such a hit? Let’s start by learning more about the recently passed day that is all about elephants.

Elephant appreciation day was on the 22nd of September. This is an annual celebration supported around the world. These beloved animals have great significance in many cultures and have played many a role throughout history, earning them a place in people’s hearts.
Elephant appreciation day was started to raise awareness for one of the world’s largest and smartest mammals. Despite this fact, elephants across the globe remain at risk, facing cruelty and suffering environmental changes such as the destruction of their homes, lack of food sources and drinkable water to endangerment from poachers and possible extinction with the number of elephants decreasing each year.

Some Facts about Elephants

Elephants have the largest brains of any land mammal. At birth, an elephant’s brain is only 35% of its full size, which means it’s able to develop dramatically with age. Ever heard the saying, an elephant never forgets? It’s actually true, due to the large size of their hippocampus where memories are stored.
Elephants are one of the few animals in the world with self-awareness and are able to recognize themselves in the mirror. Given the high intelligence of these creatures, they have their own language and are highly social, allowing them to form strong connections and even fall in love.
African elephants live in the wild in sub-Saharan rainforests and the Sahel desert in Mali. While Asian Elephants reside in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia in scrub or rainforests.
Elephants spend 80% of their day feeding, they consume several hundred pounds of vegetation (grasses, trees, roots, barks, and fruits) in a single day.
An Elephant’s trunk is one of the most versatile animal body parts in the kingdom, used for breathing, holding, touching and sound. Their trunks actually have fingers – African elephants have 2 and Asian elephants have one, which is why you see them curl their trunk when grasping something. Elephants can lift up to 770lbs thanks to 40,000 muscles in their trunk alone.

The Significance of Elephants

Elephants have long been seen as significant signs of good fortune and are often depicted in religion and spirituality.
Shamans and light workers believe that elephants bring us a deeper understanding of the maiden and the mother, this is perhaps because the eldest female elephants are the ones with the greatest knowledge and lead the family, contrary to the popular belief that the animal kingdom is male-dominated.
Ganesh is the most popular deity in Hindu mythology and appears with the head of an elephant and is said to bring good fortune to all.
Elephants are often used to symbolize family, love, strength and stamina, pride, confidence, and authority.

Problems facing Elephants

The danger to elephants has been a problem since men walked the earth, the problem has only increased over time due to the production desires of ivory and hides in areas that experience economic poverty.
There is also the issue of cruelty facing elephants who are held in captivity for shows, circuses and tourist trades. Frequently beaten, abused, neglected and kept in strict confines to serve a purpose, many do realize that when elephants are paraded for entertainment they’re often suffering.
We can all support elephants by donating to various organizations aimed to protect them, wearing jewelry or having accessories in our homes and everyday objects that uplift and value elephants and spreading awareness, or saying no to ivory or hide rugs and choosing cruelty-free alternatives.
