When it comes to holiday shopping, it can either be a blast or it can be a burden, especially when it comes to shopping for the piercing addict. Proper gifting for someone who would appreciate and adore body jewelry largely depends on knowing how to choose the right size and type of jewelry for their piercing.

Guess My Style

First and foremost, do some research on the person you are shopping for. This seems blatantly obvious but bad gifting happens ALL the time because of the lack of this first crucial step. After all, how do you think people end up with totally whack sweaters with reindeers on them as a gift?

Some easy ways to discover their sense of style is to cyber stalk them. Yes, that right. If there was ever a decent purpose to social media stalk someone, this would probably be the only legit reason for it. Check out their Facebook or Instagram page and see what type of jewelry, clothes, and accessories they currently sport. There is no sense getting them a piece of body jewelry that is elaborate and colorful when the person you’re gifting for prefers minimalistic and vice versa. It’s always nice to go completely the other way and introduce them to a style of jewelry that they have never had the opportunity try before, but beware…unless you really know the person, this can be a total gamble and the odds are not in your favor.

Location, Location, Location

Pay attention to their lifestyle. Where do they hang out often. What types of activities are they into? This can help you narrow down what type of jewelry. For instance, if you know your niece is very athletic and spends a ton of time at the gym or engaged in some other type of athletic activity, purchasing dangling, elaborate body jewelry is probably not going to be used often as a set of soft, comfortable retainers or sturdy surgical steel piercing jewelry that are minimal. Curved barbells are a favorite because they tend not to snag on clothing and stay in place even with vigorous activity.

Also, do a little research on the climate that they live in. We here in Florida have warm weather year around, so dangling belly rings are in season all year long as opposed to Pennsylvania, where they experience solid winters where the belly ring may not be useful until the summer months, well after the trends have changed. Miami and surrounding areas are notorious for big events almost every month, such as music, food, wine and boat shows, do body jewelry that are glow in the dark or have a “night out” glam feel can be worn all season.

Size Matters

For those of you gifters that have body piercings, you already know that even an eighth of an inch can make a huge difference on whether the gift is a winner or a dud. Know your averages when it comes to piercings before making a purchase on body jewelry as a gift. A Navel, septum, nipple and tongue piercing is typically done with a 14 gauge piercing needle, so unless they have stretched the piercing out, most likely, body jewelry designed for those piercings in a 14 gauge is your safest bet. An industrial piercing is also almost always done with a 14 gauge needle. A helix, conch, daith, tragus and monroe piercing is almost always done with a 16 gauge needle. Nose and ear lobe piercings are usually done with a 20 or 18 gauge needle and eyebrow and labret piercings are usually 14 or 16, making these piercings a bit harder to guess the correct sizing.

For those that have stretched ears, we recommend taking a look at their current jewelry. If it is for a someone you live with, taking a ruler and measuring their most current jewelry is the only way to get accurate sizing. If in doubt, choosing jewelry that is tapered can be a solution since the gauging changes depending on how it is worn. The diameter of tapers varies throughout so you have a better chance of getting them jewelry that they can adjust as they stretch.

Shop Away With Me

If all else fails and you are cannot decide which body jewelry would be a great choice, go for the panacea : a gift card. There is a stigma around giving gift cards are being “effortless” and a “cop out” of a gift for some but this is the one industry where gift cards are quite “normal” since sizing, style, shape and function can vary so widely.
