[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]What do Bill Nye, Buzz Aldron, Elon Musk and Tom Hanks have in common? They all share a seat on the Board of Directors for the non for profit organization called World Space Week Association. Last week, we observed this self run phenomenon that is recognized and celebrated in over 54 countries.
What exactly is World Space Week and why are we googly-eyed over it? For starters, any excuse to wear our out of this world space themed jewelry to our headquarters is a big one, but also because we are believers and supporters of expanding the mind, which is really what this organization is all about.

The Basics
World Space Week is observed in the month of October, between the 4th and 10th. These dates may sound totally rando to you but there is a historical significance for these chosen dates. On October 4th, 1957, the Sputnik 1 was launched into the outer orbit as our first attempts to understand what the universe is really made of. Then on October 10th, 1967, the Outer Space Treaty was signed. (Yes, that actually exists outside of Star Trek…)
The Outer Space Treaty, a.k.a. Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, seems kind of out of this world, but considering the realness of the vastness of our galaxy and beyond, it totally makes sense.

Why Are We Ga-Ga over Space Week?
For starters, we love the mind blowing expansion that this type of thinking evokes. As a part of a group of pretty forward thinkers falls the body modification family. Since we have joined the lifestyle movement of body modifications such as piercing, tattoos, dermals and more, we have longed for the time of total acceptance in our own species. When we expand that thought to a place of intergalactic proportions, it really makes you think on whether we would be able to live and let live if other species were to join on here on earth.
We have yet to find collective relief of acceptance here on our planet in regards to how we should live, look and love. Although we have, as a society become more aware of issue of tolerance and acceptance, we still face many day to day challenges in true acceptance. There are still many pierced and inked folks that are being looked over for jobs based on their appearance. There are mothers who get shamed and judged on their parenting skills based on their choices to keep or obtain new body modification after becoming a parent.

“Remote Sensing: Enabling Our Future”
Every year that World Space Week has been celebrated, there has been a theme chosen by to organization. “Remote Sensing: Enabling Our Future” was theme that was selected for 2016 to honor and encourage looking inward rather than outwards to embrace humanity for all, for collective betterment of the human race. We can begin and practice this exactly where we are, from a standpoint of encouraging acceptance and tolerance for all life style preferences.
It is common in the body modification world to experience some level of discrimination or judgement for the choices we make in how we present our external body. Some may even already consider us “aliens” when really, it all boils down to nothing other than a personal expression of what resonated with us. We hope through such celebrations as World Space Week, we take a moment to realize that the world we live in expands so much beyond our little day to day lives, that we are a part of something so much bigger than ourselves.
