If there was ever a show dedicated to the love, hate (no pun intended) and everything in between the dailies of the tattoo industry, this was it

As we kick off #TattooTuesdays here are BodyJewelry.com, we wanted to pay special homage to all of the tattoo, piercing and body modification industry leaders, week by week, that made an impact on how body mods are scene, loves and accepted. We’ll start with one of our favorite tattooist of all time, Darren Brass of Love Hate Tattoos.

History in the Making

Love Hate Tattoos (formerly known as 305 Ink and the home to the show Miami Ink) was aired on TLC between 2006-2008 and boasted some of the hottest ink moguls on the East coast, including Darren Brass, Ami James, James Hamilton, Kat Von D, and Chris Nunez among a few other hard hitters. The show was a major success leading to a spin off show for Kat Von D called L.A. Ink.

The show was was pivotal in showing the in’s and out’s of a tattoo shop, their artists and the clients. The dedication it takes to deliver work that is outstanding as well as find harmony in house in the body modification industry was shown maybe for the first time in this type of in-depth showing.

Love and Hate

We had a chance to visit Love Hate Tattoos, located in the heart of the bustling Miami Beach. The studio is an old school haven, complete with a bigger than life marine aquarium and guarded by a very, very relaxed and happy dog that is happy to greet no one at will. What brought us here was Darren’s newest collaboration project that caught our eye. Not that his amazing work, his recent and current accomplishments did not draw us in, but we were curious to know a bit more about this a line “skin jewelry” that is being showcased in the store lobby.

Body Jewelry : Skin Jewelry

Stay Gold Tattoos, a line of gold temporary tattoos, affectionately called “skin jewelry” by the inked artists and collaborator Zacory Ruiz, is something a bit different that the traditional “flash tattoos” we have been seeing all over the place. The designs are intricate and very much hand designed by the artists themselves.

Upon meeting Darren, we could totally understand why he has such a cult following. His personality is smooth, kind and his demeanor just makes you want to tell him the backstory of why you would ever want a tattoo. His friendliness and industry expertise is uncanny and there is not an ounce of “superstar” ego – he is as humble as a man could be.

The very first was designed by James Hamilton followed by Heartbreaker, by Darren Brass. When asked a bit about why he chose this beautiful dagger and heart design for this line on skin jewelry, he replied with an answer that summed up why he chose some of the art on his very own skin : the classic tattoo tradition.

“Daggers represent a timeless tradition in the tattoo world. I wanted to turn that idea into beautiful golden pieces of body adornment because I think they can instill an air of intrigue mixed with a bit of fear into your admirers.”

Darren has several others that he carefully handcrafted for StayGold Tattoos, the line of gold temporary tattoos that anyone can enjoy, including the Venomous Beauty, a serpent laid celtic design. This is quite similar to the non piercing jewelry we offer for the commitment phobes and those that simply cannot take the pain.

Keeping It Gold

It’s always so refreshing when we get a chance to meet someone we see on television and leave with an even higher level of admiration for the artist… and this was certainly the case. His passion for his work, his creativity and desire to connect with the human spirit through art is evident from the minute you walk into the shop until the minute you realize you exceeded your time there and have gotten so engulfed in conversation by it’s own natural flow that you are willing to skip the usual “So, how long have you been doing this?” spheel.

If you are in Miami, or visiting Miami Beach in the future, this is a tattoo shop you simply must stop by at. The decor, the vibes and the artists may just convince you it’s time to get back in the chair regardless of whether we had any plans to or not![/vc_column_text][vc_masonry_media_grid initial_loading_animation=”fadeIn” grid_id=”vc_gid:1476890031625-3fe3ad23-7cf1-6″ include=”4866,4867,4868,4870,4871,4872,4873,4874,4875″][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_separator color=”blue”][vc_custom_heading text=”Follow us for Piercing Inspiration” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center|color:%231e73be”][vc_column_text][instagram-feed][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
