(Piercing) Guns Are For Sissies

There has long been debate about the safest places to obtain a piercing and we thought no better time than the fresh start of the year to go over some of the piercing basics. We know how tempting it is to go to your nearest mall kiosk for some of the less complicated piercings, such as the lobes and cartilage, but we want to deter you from making such ill decisions with this refresher course on piercing basics 101.

Why Do (Piercing) Guns Get So Much Love?

Well for starters, the convenience of going to the mall and making an impulse decision for a minor piercing on the ear lobe(s) is a huge factor, not just for the said person but the said person’s child/children. Numerous parents take their children to their local mall ear piercing kiosk for their first piercing simply because that is what everyone else does. Not a very good reason but one that has become a staple of some sort in the United States.

For the most part, earlobe piercings seem harmless with little or no complications during healing and it is also the most common piercing that is performed throughout the globe. From infants to adults, the common notion of having an earlobe pierced seems rather harmless, right?
But how safe and clean is it really?

Cleanliness Is Next To …

We’ve all heard the cleanliness is part of spiritual well being and many other references throughout history on the importance of being clean, but does that apply when it comes to getting pierced at a mall kiosk?

The truth about the piercing guns that used in such places is that it is nearly impossible to control how effectively they are being cleaned. The truth of the matter is that there is little or no regulations by the state or federal government when it comes to these piercing guns. Furthermore, an autoclave, the machine used by hospitals, doctors and professional piercers is a pretty large machine that require room and training to be able to use, which may or may not be accommodated by the space available at a kiosk. And even if those machines were present, they need to be carefully monitored for mold and spores to make sure that the machine itself is working properly – all of which would be rather difficult to manage with the limited space and rotating staff.

There is also argument that the needles that are on those piercing guns are difficult to clean as some aren’t even removable for cleaning! The risk of having a piercing gun “re-used” on one person after the other with only a splash of rubbing alcohol is heinous.

Professional Piercers Are Professionals For a Reason

Okay guys, there is a reason why professional piercers are professionals…although there aren’t any strict regulations by the government officials on the pre-requisites for someone aspiring to be a professional body piercer, most shops have strict policies to maintain good standing with the community and industry. Also, becoming a piercer usually means taking basic training in infection control and guidelines via Association of Professional Piercers PLUS taking an apprenticeship under a practicing piercer for a certain number of hours to gain the experience necessary to perform better piercings.

Keep in mind that no matter how simple a piercing seems, the risks for complications and infections are common. Unclean piercing conditions can lead to bacterial and viral infections as well as the transmission of infectious disease such as Hepatitis C and HIV.

Get It Clean or Don’t Get It All

Scary, isn’t it? The reality of the piercings that happen at the kiosks at malls is that there is little or no control over what how the equipment that is being used to pierce you is cleaned and maintained. There can be arguments that the chances of serious or life threatening infections and complications do not occur often, however we can just as easily argue that there is no reason to take such risks.
There are plenty of amazing, safe and experienced body piercers that operate within tattoo and body modification studios that are fully equipped to sterilize and care for the instruments needed for a successful, healthy piercing. Resist the urge to treat ear lobe piercings as “non piercings” – your best bet for safe piercing is going to reputable piercing shop. Period.
